Building a Premium British Brand | Episode 4

Every Product Starts as an Idea

Every product starts somewhere.

Bare Harmony product development workspace showing skincare products, ingredients and formulation notes

Before there is a finished product, a label, a photograph or a product page, there is an idea.

For Bare Harmony, that idea wasn't simply to create another skincare range.

It was to question whether skincare really needed to be as complicated as it had become.

Starting with a question

The starting point for Bare Harmony was a simple question:

Could we create effective, enjoyable skincare by being more deliberate about what we put into each formulation?

That question became the foundation for the Ten range.

Rather than beginning with a list of ingredients we wanted to use, we began with what each product needed to do.

That distinction became important.

From idea to formulation

Turning an idea into a real product involves considerably more than choosing attractive ingredients.

Every formulation has to work as a whole.

Ingredients need to perform their intended roles, work alongside one another and produce a product that feels good to use.

There are also practical considerations around stability, preservation, pH, safety, packaging and manufacturing.

An idea may sound right, but it still has to stand up to testing and development before it can become a product.

Why every ingredient needs to earn its place

One of the principles that developed during the formulation process was that every ingredient should have a purpose.

That became central to our Ten philosophy.

Our skincare products are formulated using a maximum of 10 carefully selected ingredients, with the aim of removing unnecessary complexity rather than adding ingredients simply because they are available or fashionable.

The number itself is important to us, but the thinking behind it is even more important.

Everything should earn its place.

Development isn't about getting it right first time

Product development is rarely a straight line.

Ideas evolve.

Formulations are tested and refined. Decisions have to be reconsidered. Something that looks right on paper may need changing once it becomes a physical product.

That's part of the process.

For us, improvement isn't about constantly changing things for the sake of change. It's about making considered decisions based on what we learn.

From formulation to finished product

There is another stage that can easily be overlooked.

A product has to work beyond the formulation itself.

The packaging needs to be practical.

The information needs to be clear.

The product needs to fit naturally into someone's routine.

And the finished experience needs to reflect the reason the product was created in the first place.

This is where product development becomes more than formulation.

It becomes purposeful design.

Building a brand one decision at a time

Bare Harmony is still a young brand, but the principle remains the same across everything we do.

Whether we're developing a skincare product, deciding how it should be presented or considering how customers experience the brand, we want decisions to have a reason behind them.

That doesn't mean every decision will be perfect.

It means every decision should be intentional.

Because building a premium British brand isn't achieved through one big decision.

It's built through hundreds of smaller ones.

The journey continues

Bare Harmony has now moved from an idea into a real, launched brand.

But launching isn't the end of the development process.

It's the beginning of another stage.

We'll continue to learn, listen, improve and make decisions based on evidence rather than simply following what everyone else is doing.

Because the original idea remains just as relevant today:

Create products with purpose, remove unnecessary complexity, and make sure everything earns its place.

That's how we're building Bare Harmony — one considered decision at a time.
